Founded in 2015, Russian startup NtechLab has taken in $ 1.5 million in funding to develop a client-side facial recognition solution where no biometric data is transferred or stored by the company. Their service not only verifies or identifies faces, but recognizes age, gender, and emotions. The company’s algorithms received praise in Washington in 2017, winning the first-ever facial recognition competition devised by the R&D team run by the Director of National Intelligence. With 2,000 customers globally including the UK, US, and China, NtechLab’s technology is used in public safety, dating, security, banking, retail, entertainment, and events organization. We sat down to talk with NtechLab’s CEO, Alex Minin, to learn about how NtechLab is going head to head with Chinese computer vision startups that have taken in hundreds of millions in funding.

In competition with Moscow, Russia’s AI development companies are second to none. Many countries have started implementing such technologies as the confidence of AI developers increases. NtechLab, an AI startup, is one of the top contenders, that features FindFace face recognition technology. They were used to detect threat during the World Cup the following year. It helped in uncovering property theft and preventing other crimes.

NtechLab, a Russian software developer of neural networks and machine learning, created an emotion recognition algorithm that can detect emotions by analyzing your face. According to the startup, the solution can be adapted to different markets and industries, including media and entertainment — for example, to test a new advertisement to learn what kind of reaction it caused in focus groups.

NtechLab has placed second in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST's) Activity Extended Video (ActEV) Prize Challenge for its use of artificial intelligence for activity detection. The company plans to apply the technology to products for industrial, pharmaceutical, and smart city sectors, as well as security systems.

In Russia, 5,000 cameras in Moscow are fitted with facial recognition software that takes live footage and checks it against police and passport databases for wanted people. Moscow’s NtechLab, which makes face recognition software, is rated as one of the best in the world.

In Russia, the number of video cameras in Moscow’s public surveillance network equipped with facial biometrics will grow by 70 times from 1,500 currently to 105,000 by the end of the year. NtechLab’s technology is used in the CCTV network, and Moscow’s Department of Information Technology began testing its facial recognition with AR glasses earlier this year.

NtechLab announced today a new integration partnership that will enable Genetec Security Center users to have access to NtechLab’s FindFace facial recognition algorithm. FindFace Security creates greater situational awareness and increases the efficiency of control operations by turning video streams gathered by Genetec surveillance technologies into valuable insights with the use of AI-driven face recognition.
